Qatar Claims Profitability, But Provides No Evidence or Financial Documents

Just last month, Etihad Airways claimed $73 million in profitability without offering any evidence or releasing its financial statements.

“There is no denying the truth – Qatar Airways and Etihad receive billions in illegal subsidies from the governments of Qatar and United Arab Emirates, a direct violation of Open Skies policies,” said Zuckman. “If these airlines claim profitability and independent viability, free of subsidies, why not open their books?”

Statement on U.S. Travel Association Letter

Jill Zuckman, chief spokesperson for the Partnership for Open & Fair Skies, issued the following statement today in response to the U.S. Travel Association’s letter to the U.S. Government:

“We agree with the U.S. Travel Association that Open Skies agreements have benefited the United States and we stand behind these valuable policies. But when other countries aren’t abiding by their end of the deal, the U.S. needs to stand up for its aviation industry and enforce the rules. In this case, Open Skies is clear – subsidies are a violation of the policy. The more than $42 billion in subsidies and unfair benefits provided by Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways and Emirates have been well documented, as has the fact that these airlines have created no new demand among passengers.”

North Texas Elected Officials, Business Organizations and Others Join Effort to Protect Open Skies and Texas Jobs

In order to protect thousands of high-quality local aviation jobs and airline operations in North Texas, business and political leaders in North Texas and throughout the state have asked the U.S. government to open consultations with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as allowed under existing Open Skies agreements, to discuss the $42 billion in state subsidies provided to Qatar Airways, Emirates Airline and Etihad Airways over the past decade. Intended to foster fair competition between airlines around the world, free of government interference, Open Skies agreements have largely been successful in stimulating a healthy aviation industry and an increase in air travel.

Over 30 mayors of major U.S. cities are calling on the U.S. government to open consultations with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to address the $42 billion in subsidies and other unfair benefits funneled by their governments to their state-owned airlines. Mayors from across the country have sent letters to U.S. Secretaries of the Transportation, Commerce, and State Departments, voicing their concern over the economic impact the Gulf carriers will have on the vitality of their cities.
