Partnership for Open & Fair Skies Statement on Comments by FedEx CEO Fred Smith

Washington, D.C. (October 12, 2017) – In response to comments by FedEx CEO Fred Smith at yesterday’s National Defense Transportation Association and U.S. Transportation Command event, the Partnership for Open & Fair Skies released the following statement:

“Fred Smith needs to get his facts straight. U.S. airlines and their fleet of widebodies support our military through the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) program – foreign fleets do not,” said Jill Zuckman, chief spokesperson for the Partnership for Open and Fair Skies. “If our government doesn’t stand up and fight for American workers against foreign trade cheating, these American businesses won’t be able to sustain the aircraft that the U.S. military calls upon in an emergency. The Gulf carriers have already harmed our military readiness by forcing all American carriers off of routes to the Middle East, and almost entirely out of India.”

“Once again, we’d like to remind Mr. Smith that enforcing our trade deals against passenger carrier violations would not affect the business of rule-abiding cargo airlines.”
